EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
The Hertfordshire Building Preservation Trust seeks to create
interest in the historic built environment and promote good practice in its
maintenance. It delivers these aims through a variety of events in the
community.
THE DESIGN + CONSERVATION SHOW
This was an occasional two day event held at Hatfield House and was run jointly with the
Hertfordshire Association of Architects (HAA). It included a full programme of
seminars, an exhibition of specialist manufacturers and craftspeople,
demonstrations of traditional skills and children’s workshops.
The show promised something for all those interested in the historic
environment.

YOUNG PEOPLE
The Trust seeks to target the younger community to ensure that future
generations gain an interest in historic buildings and conservation issues.
Art Project at Morgans JMI School
the HBPT and the HAA sponsored an art project at Morgans JMI School in
Hertford. Claire Toms, Hertfordshire Artist, worked with two classes over four
weeks. Pupils were asked to look closely at the features of local buildings and
create textural relief images. The work formed a frieze of historic buildings
and was exhibited at the Listed Building Show.

Children’s Art Workshop
A children's art workshop run by David Kefford, Community Artist, proved
to be one of the highlights of the 2 days at the Conservation + Design Show. Children were encouraged to look at
Hatfield House or photographs of listed buildings in Hertfordshire and do a
preliminary drawing of their chosen building. They then had the opportunity to
create textural, relief images, painting etc.

Art & Photographic Competition for Young People
The brief was to take a photograph
or draw a picture of one of the 8000+ listed
buildings in Hertfordshire. Once the judging had taken place all the entries were
put in an exhibition at Place House Hall, Ware and there was a presentation
ceremony for the winners to collect their prizes. There was always a great deal of interest and when judging
the competition Louise O’Gorman, of ‘Photography by Louise’ in Hertford, said “
I so enjoyed judging the Photographic Competition for Young People and was very
impressed by the standard of photography especially considering some entrants
were as young as 5¾. I am so glad I am not an architectural photographer in
Hertfordshire as I’d have some stiff competition!”

and which tackled some of the development challenges of the 21st Century. The
day brought together many stakeholders in the built environment for a series of
challenging presentations. The conference was Hertfordshire’s major event for
