Castle Cottages, Water Lane, Hertford

In 1971 the Castle Cottages, Water Lane, Hertford were in a very poor state of repair, and could have been demolished without the assistance of the Hertfordshire Building Preservation Trust. A Grade II listed building, they form part of a group of adjacent buildings which are also listed, and stand along the west side of the Castle grounds. The stables and the adjoining cottages were built for the Marquess of Downshire in conjunction with his reconstruction of the Gate House in the 18th century.

Today

The 5 cottages were conveyed to the Trust in 1971/2 by the Hertford Borough Council. The Trust sought funds for renovation and to return them back to residential use. This was achieved by 1976.

The Trust has retained the property so that the rent paid by its tenants can be used for the upkeep of the building and to fund further restoration projects.
